Kinky Celebrates Their 10-Year Anniversary On “Sueño de la Máquina”
09/14/12 |Released in stores July 17, Mexican electro-rock band Kinky debuts their new album, “Sueño de la Máquina” (Dream of a Machine), celebrating their 10-year music career. The band has come a long way and have proven their longevity and their progressive sound style.
A decade ago the band won New York’s Latin Alternative Music Conference’s Discovery Contest and this summer they returned as headliners at NYC’s Central Park Summer Stage as a Nacional Record band.
Kinky fans are some of the most loyal followers, and have helped the band’s success, including a Latin Grammy Nomination and performances in the famous music festival Coachella.
Their new album was produced and mixed by legendary Dust Brother John King, who has produced albums for Beck, Rolling Stones and Beastie Boys.
Like the album title reference to machines, these guys have proven to be working music machines that deliver an amazing sound of electro, rock, traditional Mexican-Norteño and cumbia creating a true fusion of melodies that will make anyone want to get up and dance.
A track that features Spanish hip-hop artist Mala Rodríguez, “Negro Dia” (Black Day), is my personal favorite. Her fun and catchy chorus will stick in your head all day after you listen to it. Kinky’s fun beats and her raw rap flows was a great collaboration.
Another personal favorite is “Tripolar” which also shows the hybrid of sounds they create by mixing accordion-like tunes and some reggaetón-like beats. Their music definitely defines the new movement of music that meshes all sounds creating a unique and easily distinguishable style, the Kinky style.
Their song “Control” mixes dubstep beats, trumpet sound tunes, rock and hip hop making you loose control. It will instantly make you want bob your head and sway your body left to right.
Aside from their captivating rhythms their lyrics paint a perfect picture of a regular “Kinky” day. The song “Depués del After” is a great story referencing “la calle Obregon,” a popular street in the capital of the Mexican state of Jalisco. They take you step by step through their venture partying in the densely populated city filled with great nightlife.
Their upbringing in the northern state of Mexico, Monterey, Nuevo Leon, is demonstrated through their Spanglish lyrics, which shows the influence of American pop-culture by weaviing the two national languages in their songs.
All five band members, Gilberto Cerezo, Ulises Lozano, Carlos Chairez, Omar Góngora, and Cesar Pliego, are perfectly in sync in this album creating their own diverse style yet producing great music as one.
This is a perfect summer album you will want to play at a BBQ, a night out with your friends or while you’re driving in L.A. traffic. It’s a fun and playful album.
